Major League Soccer (MLS): Top competition in the US and Canada

Is football in North America getting better?

Why it’s worth watching: Lionel Messi stole the headlines when he joined Inter Miami in July 2023. But the MLS is more than just one global star. The league has grown in recent years, underlined by an increasing number of talent moving to Europe. Attendance figures have steadily increased over the past decade while Apple has boosted the global audience with a 10-year media rights deal which started last year.

Three things you should know:

• Similar to other leagues in North America, the MLS is separated into the regular season (played in the Eastern and the Western Conference) and the play-offs. The best team of the regular season wins the Supporters' Shield, but the MLS Cup goes to the winner of the play-off final.

• With 5 MLS Cups, Los Angeles Galaxy are the most successful team in league history so far. Overall, 15 teams have won the championship at least once. Toronto is so far the only Canadian team which has won the MLS Cup.

• The MLS has a salary cap in place. While the details are pretty complicated, it ensures that all teams are highly competitive. Special rules nevertheless allow teams to sign star players – with Lionel Messi being the best example.

By the numbers: Out of the 29 teams, Inter Miami has the highest market value at €97 million. D.C. United has the lowest market value at €24.65 million. (Source: www.transfermarkt.com)

Kerem Aktürkoğlu (Türkiye): 100 points against Iceland

Kerem Aktürkoğlu contributed significantly to the Turkish national team's solid start to the current UEFA Nations League campaign. After a draw in Wales, the first home game took place in Izmir. It ended with a 3-1 win against Iceland with Aktürkoğlu scoring a hat trick. It will be interesting to see whether the left winger can continue his strong start in the Portuguese league. He just completed his transfer from Galatasary to Benfica and will hope to find the back of the net immediately after the international break.

• Game week 11 (20-24 September): It's a global competition, but with a twist: The cap for your team is just 200 points. There's also an in-season special for the Dutch Eredivisie.

• Game week 12 (24-27 September): The Underdog competition returns. You can use all your players, but only if they have an average of less than 50 points in the last 15 games.

• Game week 14 (1-4 October): Three special events in one game week – one for the Champions League, one for the other European competitions and a Global All Star competition on top!
