Bundesliga 2: Germany’s second tier

The Bundesliga 2 is kicking off on Friday.

Why it’s worth watching: It is "one of the best leagues across the whole of Europe", according to the official Bundesliga website. Seriously though, it's great to watch: many surprising results, promotion and relegation battles are hard to predict – and more than three goals per game on average last season!

Three things you should know:

  • Average attendance was 29,189 last season – slightly more than Spain's La Liga or France's Ligue 1.

  • Fortuna Düsseldorf remains in Bundesliga 2 after losing the relegation/promotion playoffs on penalties.

  • With FC Schalke 04, 1. FC Köln and Hamburger SV, there are no less than three teams in the league with more than 100,000 members each.

By the numbers: Out of the 18 teams, relegated 1. FC Köln has the highest market value at €69.7 million. Newly promoted Preussen Münster has the lowest market value at €9.25 million. (Source: www.transfermarkt.com)

💯 Our player of the week

Joel Waterman (CF Montreal): 100 points against Orlando City SC

The defender had a perfect game on the Sorare scoring matrix against Orlando, even though his team did not. Orlando won 4-1, getting off to a great start in the Leagues Cup which brings the MLS and the Mexican Liga MX together in one competition. Montreal then managed to win 3-2 against Mexican side San Luis. Waterman started the game – and managed to score merely 2 points as he conceded two penalties.
