Premier League: The best league in the world?
The Premier League is kicking off on Friday.
Why it’s worth watching: It's the most watched league in the world – and it has developed massively since its introduction in 1992/93 (it replaced the previous First Division). And while it is generally considered to be extremely competitive, Manchester City has dominated in recent years, winning six of the last seven championships (including the last four years in a row). Will any team be able to break City's stranglehold in the upcoming season?
Three things you should know:
51 different teams have competed in the Premier League – only six teams have played in each season so far (Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham).
Blackburn Rovers are the only former Premier League champion currently outside the Premier League.
13 of the 20 current Premier League teams have won a title in England's top division. Very few Newcastle United fans, however, will remember the last time their team finished a season at the top of the standings – because it was in 1927.
By the numbers: Out of the 20 teams, Manchester City has the highest market value at €1.32 billion. Newly promoted Ipswich Town has the lowest market value at €91.15 million. (Source: www.transfermarkt.com)
💯 Our player of the week
Jon Gorenc Stankovic (Sturm Graz): 100 points against TSV Hartberg
Reigning Austrian champions Sturm Graz got their first win of the season against TSV Hartberg. Jon Gorenc Stankovic was playing as a defensive midfielder, helping his team to secure a clean sheet. That wasn't enough, however – he even managed to score an assist for the first goal in the 2-0 win.
