Süper Lig: Turkey's top league

The Süper Lig is kicking off on Friday.

Why it’s worth watching: The competition will be just as fierce as during the previous season. Four of the 19 teams will be relegated so that the league will finally be back to 18 teams next season. At the top end, will there be competition for Galatasaray and Fenerbahce, the two teams which are heavy favourites among the bookmakers?

Three things you should know:

• Six of the 19 teams are from Istanbul – but only one of those is based on the Asian side of Turkey's largest city.

• With a capacity of just 4,500 fans, Bodrum FK has by far the smallest stadium in the league; it's their first-ever season in the Süper Lig.

• Since 1985, only two non-Istanbul based teams have won the league (Bursaspor in 2010, Trabzonspor in 2022).

By the numbers: Out of the 19 teams, Fenerbahce has the highest market value at €252 million. Newly promoted Bodrum FK has the lowest market value at €12.9 million. (Source: www.transfermarkt.com)

Matthias Zimmermann (Fortuna Düsseldorf): 100 points against Darmstadt 98

After narrowly missing out on promotion in a penalty shootout, Fortuna Düsseldorf wants to have another go. They got off to a good start, partly due to a great performance from right back Matthias Zimmermann who got one assist in their 2-0 win at Darmstadt 98, one of the two teams that were relegated from the Bundesliga.

The boys kick off season two of their podcast with a special guest. The darts are flying, the ball knowledge is poor, but there is some good chat throughout.

🗓️ Competition schedule

• Game week 502 (16-20 August): There are two specials, one for the Belgian league (with cash prizes), one is a capped competition with cards up for grabs.

• Game week 503 (20-23 August): The Global All Star competition is back – no restrictions at all, every card can play in your line-up.

• Game week 504 (23-27 August): It’s a global competition with a twist – all five players in your line-up have to play for different clubs.
